Our Method
Pic Pals: First Steps in Photography (ages 5-7):
At this age, children are just beginning to understand the world around them. We keep the sessions light-hearted and fun. Praise their efforts and give constructive feedbacks. The goal is to nurture their creativity, self-confidence and provide them with a new way to observe and interact with the world around them. The focus is on exploration and creative expression rather than on the final product.
Self Portraits: Encourage children to take self-portraits. This can promote self-expression and allow them to see themselves from different perspectives. They can experiment with facial expressions, poses, and backgrounds.
"I Spy" Photos: In this activity, children are encouraged to be observant and curious. They can choose a theme (like shapes, colors, or emotions) and then go on a 'photo hunt' to find and photograph these elements in their surroundings.
"A Day in My Life" Project: Children can document their day from start to finish, taking photos of their activities, meals, family, friends, pets, and anything else that is part of their daily life. This helps them understand and appreciate their everyday environment.
Shapes in Everyday Life: We encourage them to take photos of different shapes they see around them. This strengthens their understanding of geometry and spatial relations.
Photo Collage: After they've taken several photos, we ask them to create a collage or a photo album on a specific theme. This encourages creative thinking and organizational skills.
Young Photographers (ages 8-12): The course would delve deeper into technical aspects, like composition and lighting, and encourage storytelling, self-portraits, nature photography, action shots, and basic photo editing. We also encourage them to start to use art as a form of self-expression.
Emotion Photography: Taking pictures that represent different emotions. This can help them understand and express their feelings better.
Storytelling Through Photos: We propose a theme or a story for them to depict through their photos. This can be a daily routine, a favorite fairy tale, or a school event. This encourages creativity and narrative skills.
Shapes in Everyday Life: We encourage them to take photos of different shapes they see around them. This strengthens their understanding of geometry and spatial relations.
"My Perspective" Series: We encourage children to take photos from their point of view, literally and metaphorically. This fosters self-expression and allows them to share how they perceive their world.
Exploring Camera Settings: We introduce them different cameras, and teach them about various camera settings and their effects on photographs. Allow them to experiment with settings such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, if using a camera that permits manual adjustments.
Photography as a universal language
Photography is a powerful tool for exploration and comprehension, fostering in children a curiosity about the world around them. It encourages them to express themselves and to understand others by seeing the world from different perspectives."
